New Tulum airport

New Tulum Airport, Mexico

The new Tulum airport in Mexico represents a significant advancement in the country’s infrastructure and is destined to be a central hub for tourism and the economy of the region. This project is part of the infrastructure initiatives promoted by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, which include other projects like the Maya Train.

The location of the airport in Tulum is strategic due to its proximity to numerous tourist attractions, including world-renowned beaches, Mayan archaeological sites, and natural reserves. Tulum, known for its natural beauty and cultural heritage, has seen exponential growth in its population and tourism in the last decades. This airport seeks not only to improve the connectivity of the region but also to distribute the tourist flow more equitably, which is currently heavily concentrated in Cancún.

Construction of the Tulum Airport

The construction of the airport is under the charge of the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena), and the work is expected to have a significant impact in terms of employment and local economic development. Additionally, the project includes sustainability features and respect for the natural environment, crucial aspects given the ecological value of the region.

The operational capacity of the airport is planned to handle a considerable volume of passengers and flights, both domestic and international. This includes not only the handling of commercial flights but also general and executive aviation. The airport’s infrastructure will be equipped with cutting-edge technology to ensure the safety and efficiency of air operations.

The Tulum airport will not only improve accessibility to this region but is also expected to have a positive impact on the local economy, enhancing tourism, and offering new business opportunities. Its connection to the federal highway 307 and the Maya Train will also facilitate better integration of the region with other key destinations in Mexico.

When will it be available?

The airport is scheduled to begin operations in 2024, coinciding with the end of the current presidential term. This project is seen as an important legacy of the current administration, with the hope that it will contribute significantly to the development and prosperity of the Quintana Roo region and, by extension, of Mexico.
